Dovizioso (Ducati): “Once again today I was unable to finish"

Yet again another rider’s mistake costs Andrea Dovizioso an almost certain podium finish. Andrea Dovizioso is quickly becoming the unluckiest man in the MotoGP™ World Championship, the Ducati Team rider having been taken out by other riders in the last two races. In both Argentina and America ‘Desmo Dovi’ looked almost certain to finish on the podium. After an excellent start Dovizioso was comfortable is second place until Jorge Lorenzo
(Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) passed him on lap five. But the Ducati Team rider stuck with him and was defending his potential third place with ease until Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) lost the front at Turn 1. Pedrosa would collide with Dovizioso, ending his race. It was clear the incident was an accident, Pedrosa immediately apologising and checking on the Italian.

Once more Dovizioso focused on taking positives rather than lamenting the negative. In all three races he has shown the pace to battle for the podium and has escaped any serious injury. He was also able to improve his pace dramatically on race day after having struggled somewhat during practice. All Dovizioso needs is some luck, once that comes it’s clear to see he’ll be back on the podium once again. With 23 points, Dovizioso holds seventh in the standings and is still seven points clear of his teammate Andrea Iannone.

Andrea Dovizioso: “I am really very disappointed because once again today I was unable to finish my race following a mistake by another rider, and losing two possible podiums out of three is the hardest thing to accept in view of the championship. However I also want to look at the positive aspects: I didn’t hurt myself and given the way the incident happened it could have been a lot worse. In addition, in three different races, in very difficult situations to manage for the tyres, we have always been able to fight for the podium. Today we could have been second in the championship just a few points behind Marquez, so from this point of view I am very pleased with the work that we are doing. Even when we are not so fast in practice, in the race we always manage to be competitive: this is the way a factory rider has to race when he is thinking about the championship.”

Dovizioso's first pole of 2016 Motul TT Assen Netherlands

Dovizioso's first pole of 2016 Motul TT Assen Netherlands . Andrea Dovizioso took advantage of a drying track to claim his first pole position since Qatar in 2015 ahead of Valentino Rossi and Scott Redding. In 2009 at the British GP Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) took his so far only MotoGP™ World Championship victory. This cemented his reputation as a wet weather specialist, his Qualifying performance in Assen only adding to said reputation. Qualifying wasn’t fully wet, a dry line emerging towards the end of the session and calling for a thoughtful, rather than aggressive, approach. He and his team had originally decided to use only one set of tyres, but a split second decision saw the Italian return to the pits for a last minute swap. It proved an excellent decision as he produced a 1’45.246 on his final lap, grabbing him pole position by 0.715s. "I had already identified the corners where I could push like in the dry, while in the others I have followed in Ros...

Valentino Rossi: “Some places of the track that were starting to dry”

Valentino Rossi: “ Some places of the track that were starting to dry ”. A gamble with a second wet tyre paid off for Valentino Rossi and enabled him to take second on the grid for the Motul TT Assen. Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) called upon all his expertise to assess the grim condition of the TT Circuit Assen on Sunday. While Free Practice 3 was held in more or less dry conditions, Free Practice 4 was the opposite as the rain came down. Rossi was immediately comfortable in the wet, ending the session second just behind Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team). Knowledge of the wet would come in very handy for Q2, the track starting wet and drying as the session went on. As has become a habit of his, Rossi waited for other riders to head out before venturing out himself. With clear space in hand, Rossi performed an exploratory lap before beginning to push and provisionally moving into third. The track continued to dry and forced Rossi back into the pits, his rear ...
